Once you decide to get a pup, here are some books which are highly recommended to help you understand the newest member of your family.  I must admit I have not read them all but I will!

Childproofing Your Dog and it's sister book, Dogproofing Your Child, by Brian Kilcommons.

How To Raise a Puppy You Can Live With, by Rutherford and Neil

Don't Shoot the Dog!, by Karen Pryor (she is the queen of clicker training)

Culture Clash, by Jean Donaldson (this is not so much a training book,as one oriented towards understanding dogs)
